LA Rams Fearsome Foursome

Fearsome Foursome
(from left): Lamar Lundy, Rosey Grier, Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones

Lamar Lundy started in 1957 with the Rams.  In 1961 Deacon Jones started his career year with the Rams.  In 1962 the Rams third pick in the first round draft was Merlin Oslen, defensive tackle from Utah State.  In 1963 Rosey Grier was acquired from the New York Giants and joined with Lundy, Olsen and Jones to the form the original stingy defensive line called the..."Fearsome Foursome"!

This was one of the greatest defensive line in the Rams franchise.

  • they gang tackled
  • pursued plays
  • sack quarterbacks

They had the ability to bull rush any offensive line.  They would stunt and cause confusion to opposing offenses.  They even would rotate their positions during the game.  Roger Brown join the Rams in 1967 replaced Grier at DT.  In 1968 the defense set a 14-game NFL record for the fewest yards allowed.  Former head coach George Allen with the defense led the Rams to two division titles (1967 & 1969).

Fearsome Foursome one of the most formidable defensive line in NFL history.

  • 85 Lamar Lundy DE (1957 - 1969)

  • 76 Rosey Grier DT (1963 - 1966)

  • 74 Merlin Olsen DT (1962 - 1976)

  • 75 DE David (Deacon) Jones (1961 - 1971)

Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen are both in the Hall of a Fame.
And both are in the Rams' Ring of Fame and NFL's 75th Anniversary team in 1994.
