Left to Right (Tom Fears, Bob Waterfield & Norm Van Brocklin)

Elroy (Crazylegs) Hirsch

1950 Rams developed one of the most explosive and exciting offensive teams in NFL.

Head coach Joe Stydahar

Team Record 9-3

Norm Van Brocklin - Passed 2,061 yards
Glenn Davis - Rushed 416 yards
Tom Fears - Received 1,116 yards

  • Team scored 466 points

  • Average 38.3 points per game, in a 12 regular season game

  • First team to have all the games televised

  • Team set 22 league records

Hall of Famers Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin teamed up at quarterback.

Hall of Famers Tom Fears and Elroy (Crazylegs) Hirsch did the receiving.   Bob Boyd also did the receiving.

The "Bull Elephant Backfield" of Tank Younger, Deacon Dan Towler and Dick Hoerner did the running.  Glenn Davis was leading rusher.  Younger said, "The Rams were introducing the bomb to pro football, so the running game often got overshadowed."

Other stars included linemen Don Paul and Hall of Famer Andy Robustelli and backs V.T. Smith, Tom Kalmanir, and Skeet Quinlan.

Bob Waterfield and Dan Towler both had 3 All-Pro Seasons.

  • Note: Elroy Hirsch was called "Crazylegs" by a Chicago Tribune writer, because Hirsch said, "I ran like a girl."
  • Now Verda Smith became "Vitamin T" because Los Angeles Times writer Frank Finch didn't like the name Verda.  So he was called V.T. Smith.
  • Now Paul Younger became "Tank" because of his undergraduate days at Grambling.

A "quote" from Tank Younger:

"The game was more fun back then," says Younger.   "There's no question the guys enjoyed playing a helluva lot more.  We weren't making great big money back then [top players such as Hirsch earned about $12,000 a year] so there were no outside distractions like looking at the Wall Street Journal.

" Football is more sophisticated now," adds Younger. "The fans, coaches, and players are all a little bit more knowledgeable.   The game is more enjoyable to watch today.

"But I wouldn't trade my memories of those days for all the money these players make today."
